So-called spared areas are a typical finding in a patient suffering from the ARDS. In the case of ARDS, pulmonary affection is never completely homogeneous such as in case of pulmonary oedema or fibrosis. Regions showing significant pathology can be found right next to the regions of the normally aerated lung (which is not the case of pulmonary oedema):
